Short for the Italian word “salone” and root of the Parisian “salon”, the name was chosen to represent the informal lively nature of the hosted gatherings. In concept, Sala gatherings are meant to revive the Café Society culture present during the heydays of great cities – Paris in the 1920s and 30s; New York City in the 1950s. In contrast to the exclusivity typical of classical Parisian salon gatherings reserved for the social elite, Sala aims to attract multi-generational, interdisciplinary minds of concerned individuals from all walks of life. Sala gatherings will be held in semi-public spaces around downtown New York with hopes of engaging the public sphere and reinvigorating the social fabric of the city.cafe-society-ny

This notion is reflective of the Sala mission – here to promote idea and information exchange, and to facilitate interaction. sala-birthWe look forward to ongoing modifications and restructurings of the website as we develop the online Sala community. We encourage visitors to submit content – be it links to relevant articles of interest, photographs, artwork, paintings, writings, studies, etc., as we continue our progress.
